Personal Flotation Devices fall into two categories:
Buoyancy Aids and Life Jackets
What is the difference?
A Buoyancy Aid is designed to provide additional buoyancy to a
conscious person who is able to swim and help themselves, where help is close at
hand. They should conform to EN 393, and provide 50N (5.5kg) of buoyancy.
A Life Jacket provides buoyancy in an emergency. It should turn the
wearer face up, even when unconscious. The three standards are: EN 395 (100N
(11kg) buoyancy), EN 396 (150N (16kg) buoyancy) and EN 399 (275N (28kg)
buoyancy)
